Forget the Flu: The Norovirus Is Taking Over America

From theAtlanticWire

DASHIELL BENNETT 7:15 AM ET
Just when it seemed like this year's flu epidemic was finally under control, along comes the CDC with a new plague that's sweeping the nation: the norovirus. The Centers for Disease Control says the stomach bug has caused 140 local outbreaks since September, and that the number of outbreaks caused by a newly discovered strain jumped thirty percent in December.

The newest strain of the norovirus is not especially deadly, but it is highly contagious (it actually started in Australia) and makes even the healthiest individuals quite miserable. Symptoms include dehydration, diarrhea, and projectile vomiting. The latter problem is what make the virus so difficult to contain, as the virus itself can live outside the human body for an unusually long time. It spreads easily through hospitals, schools, cruise ships, and anywhere that people are in close contact and aren't as clean as they need to be.

U.S. Mint Silver Coins Run Out as Buying at 5-Year High

More than ever, we need to finds ways to hedge against inflation as Central Banks in major economies are resorting to quantitative easing, commonly known as printing money. Japan's new Prime Minister, Mr Abe has already made known his intentions of printing money till his 2% inflation target is reached.

In view of new stimulus programs from all the major governments, investors in droves, are buying up silver coins and other precious metals to hedge against currency fall outs.

Below is an article from Bloomberg news:

U.S. Mint Silver Coins Run Out as Buying at 5-Year High

By Nicholas Larkin - Jan 18, 2013 7:33 AM ET

The U.S. Mint sold out of 2013 American Eagle silver coins at a time when investors bought the most metal in five years through the biggest exchange-traded product.

The mint’s sales are “temporarily” suspended and will resume on or about the week of Jan. 28 when inventory is replenished, it said yesterday in an e-mailed statement. Holdings in the iShares Silver Trust jumped 571.6 metric tons on Jan. 16, an increase now valued at $584 million. Prices may rise as much as 27 percent to $40.25 an ounce this year, a Bloomberg survey of 49 analysts, traders and investors last month showed.

Global assets in silver ETPs climbed to a record valued at $20.1 billion as central banks from the U.S. to China pledged more steps to boost economic growth. The stimulus is raising demand for precious metals as a hedge against faster inflation and currency debasement. Strengthening economies may also benefit silver, because 53 percent of it is used in everything from televisions to batteries, the Silver Institute says.

People read TechCrunch because they want to create something, they don’t want to follow orders all of their lives, and they want financial freedom. I’m being blunt. The above three items feel good. God bless you. Hopefully once you get the three things above, you get to keep them. Most people (i.e. ME) have to ride a roller coaster for awhile because we are stupid. But some people are smart.

Getting the things you want is hard but for reasons I explain below, you now have no other choice. The myth of corporate safety, of rising up through the ranks, of getting the gold watch, of getting applauded by your peers is over. Not because the economy is bad. But because innovation and the global economy are better than ever.

Bringing Hope to the Hopeless

Part of what makes Market America and SHOP.COM so special is our commitment to helping entrepreneurs around the world unlock their potential and make their dreams a reality. It’s what motivates me and drives me to succeed on a daily basis. But it seems that in today’s economy, many people have given up on pursuing their dreams.

I recently came across this interesting article from CNN, which discusses the large number of Americans who have essentially given up hope of ever landing a job. Known as “hopelessly unemployed,” nearly three million Americans want a job, but have quit searching for one – something I find simply stunning.

January 6-12 is National Folic Acid Awareness Week. How much
do you know about folic acid? Take our quiz to find out.

Folic acid is a B vitamin. If a woman has enough folic acid in her body before and during pregnancy, it can help prevent some major birth defects of the baby’s brain, known as anencephaly, and spine, known as spina bifida.

Anencephaly is a serious birth defect in which parts of a baby’s brain and skull do not form correctly. Babies born with anencephaly cannot survive. Spina bifida is a serious birth defect in which a baby’s spine does not develop correctly and can result in some severe physical disabilities.

Women who can become pregnant need 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day.

Student Loan Default Rate Hits a Scary 11%

Student Loan Default Rate Hits a Scary 11%
~ by Michael Lombardi, MBA

Another crisis looming in the air...

Student debt is going to be the next big hurdle to deal with in the U.S.’s economic recovery. Total student loan debt currently stands very close to $1.0 trillion and defaults on these loans are increasing at an alarming rate, placing more pressure on economic growth.

In the third quarter of 2012, student loans delinquent over 90 days stood at an alarming 11%. (Source: Federal Reserve Bank of New York, November 2012.)

I expect this delinquency rate and default rate to rise. It’s not rocket science: there is no economic recovery or real economic growth. Americans are still suffering. The more they suffer, the more they fall back on their loan payments. Thus, how can students get a break?

Here is what the U.S. secretary of Education Arne Duncan said about the looming student debt crisis: “We continue to be concerned about the default rates and want to ensure that all borrowers have the tools to manage their debt. In addition to helping borrowers, we will also hold schools accountable for ensuring their students are not saddled with unmanageable student loan debt.” (Source: U.S. Department of Education, “Press Release: First Official Three-year Student Loan Default Rates Published,” September 28, 2012.)

B vitamins May Boost Colon Health
 Author: Olivia Mungal

B vitamins are well-known for their cognitive health and brain function properties, but these essential vitamins may play an important role in digestive health, too. According to recent finding published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, increasing your intake of riboflavin (B2) and vitamin B6 show signs of a 20% reduction of colon cancer.

Over 88,000 post-menopausal women were sampled for the study, and out of the sample size, 1,003 incident colorectal cancer cases were diagnosed. Results showed that the highest average intake (3.97mg daily) of riboflavin and B2 showed the most promise, and a whopping 20% lower risk of colon cancer than the other subjects taking the lowest amount (1.8mg).

The Future of Medicine Is Now

The Wall Street Journal
THE SATURDAY ESSAY Updated December 31, 2012, 4:27 p.m. ET

The Future of Medicine Is Now
Ron Winslow
From cancer treatments to new devices to gene therapy, a look at six medical innovations that are poised to transform the way we fight disease

In our era of instant gratification, the world of medicine seems like an outlier. The path from a promising discovery to an effective treatment often takes a decade or more.

But from that process—of fits and starts, progress and setbacks and finally more progress—grow the insights and advances that change the course of medicine.

A decade ago, the completion of the Human Genome Project sparked optimism that cures for debilitating diseases were just around the corner. Cures still generally elude us, but now the ability to map human DNA cheaply and quickly is yielding a torrent of data about the genetic drivers of disease—and a steady stream of patients who are benefiting from the knowledge. On other fronts, technology is putting more power in the hands of patients, and researchers are learning to combat disorders by harnessing the body's own ability to heal and grow.
