Biderman's Daily Edge 1/25/2012: Explaining the Bullish Market

"The fact that the Fed continues to create $100 billion of new money each month to support the economy is not as important to them as is the cumulative 60% growth in the federal deficit since 2008. Also irrelevant is that take home pay net of inflation is and has been declining on a year over year basis for the past several months."

Overcoming Employment Servitude

Habits are hard to beat. Being employed is a form of habit. Once we are "hooked" on it, it is difficult to break away. We become dependent on the paycheck, living from paycheck to paycheck. It becomes our "hopeium", hoping that we will rise through the ranks. For most of us, we are no more than employed slaves doing the biddings of our "master". Employment with slave wages is the most prevalent form of servitude in our modern world today. It is a legal form of exploitation.

I know these are strong statements but it is the truth. How else do you explain why morale amongst workers is so low? Everyone it seems want to leave their job but is afraid to. You cannot blame them because the economy "sucks" and opportunities are limited unless you are highly qualified in areas of the economy that are in high demand.

The question is, why is it so difficult to free ourselves from this employment slavery? What is it that makes us literally bust our chops for our employers knowing our rewards are minuscule, in the process makingthem rich. No doubt there are some benevolent employers out there and if you are lucky to be employed by them, I am happy for you. For the rest of us stuck with indifferent and heartless employers, what would it take to jump ship?

If a business opportunity with a tested successful formula is presented to you......would you bite? Would you at least investigate if it will work or would you just brush it off as a scam and continue with your voluntary employment servitude. If you are miserable at your work place there is no one to blame.

What makes an entrepreneur? What makes him/her see opportunities while others see obstacles? What makes him so willing to take risk so he can stay independent?

Do you have the answer?

Turmeric/Curcumin

On December 28, 2010, Dr Andrew Weil wrote: "Looking for a simple New Year's resolution for health? Add turmeric to your diet."

It could very well be this new year's resolution or next. Turmeric is that good.  Its chief componenet, curcumin, gives it its golden color. You already know that turmeric has been used as both food and medicine for centuries. The question is which is better to take, whole turmeric in powder form used as spice or take curcumin, an extract as a daily supplement? According to Dr Weil, "Each has been shown to have health benefits, but unless you have a specific condition such as inflammatory bowel disease, I favor using turmeric (especially in cooking) rather than taking curcumin pills. This reflects my general belief that, until proven otherwise in head to head studies, whole plants are usually a better choice than isolates. On the other hand, curcumin appears to have a more rapid and dramatic effect, and may be the better choice as a therapeutic (rather than a preventative) preparation."

In Dr Weil's article he wrote:
"Here's a quick roundup of recent research on both turmeric and curcumin.
  • Curcumin seems to delay liver damage that can eventually lead to cirrhosis, according to preliminary experimental research at the Medical University Graz in Austria.

  • Kansas State University research found that adding certain spices, including turmeric, can reduce the levels of heterocyclic amines -- carcinogenic compounds that are formed when meats are barbecued, boiled or fried -- by up to 40 percent.

  • Rodent studies at the University of Texas indicate that curcumin inhibits the growth of a skin cancer, melanoma and also slows the spread of breast cancer into the lungs.

  • Researchers from the University of South Dakota have found that pretreatment with curcumin makes cancer cells more vulnerable to chemo and radiotherapy.

  • Epidemiologists have hypothesized that the turmeric that is part of daily curries eaten in India may help explain the low rate of Alzheimer's disease in that country. Among people aged 70 to 79, the rate is less than one-quarter that of the United States.
Naturally, there's far more to good health than adding this spice to your meals. But as part of an overall plan that includes an anti-inflammatory diet, regular exercise, stress-reduction and prudent supplementation, a daily sprinkle of turmeric in your cooking can be a valuable addition to your healthy lifestyle, and a great habit with which to begin a happy new year!"

Turmeric - The Anti-everything Rhizome

Turmeric is commonly used as a spice in India as well as South East Asia. It comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and is a member of the ginger family. Long before modern scientists try to re-discover its many benefits, turmeric had been used as food as well as for treating ailments in Indian Aryuverdic healing and in China as herbal medicine. An extract that gives it the orange color pigmentation, curcumin, has since been found to have powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-rhematic, and anti-tumor properties.

There are currently more than 700 studies on curcumin world-wide, and many clinical trials are confirming the remarkable healing properties of this golden extract from the turmeric "rhizome" which is an unnderground stem that resembles the root of a plant. Scientists have noted prevalent diseases such as Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis that afflict western societies are lacking in India. Their research inevitably led them to discover turmeric, hence, curcumin. Turmeric is one of the main ingredients of curry powder and is consumed on a daily basis. It is a staple of an Indian household. Its is commonly used to heal wounds and taken orally for various ailments.

With so much interests in curcumin, it is no surprise that new studies have shown it to be a wonder natural "drug" in healing as well as preventing illnesses. Among diseases that curcumin seems to be beneficial in relieveing or reversing are Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, diabetes and cancer.

There are more than 2,800 research papers published. You can find some of them in http://www.pubmed.gov/.

Mobile Internet/Commerce

We lived through the PC revolution and we missed investing in giants like Microsoft, Intel, Dell, Compaq, Hewlett Packard and Gateway. Almost simultaneously, the following communication companies like Qualcomm, Cisco, SynOptics, JDS Uniphase, Applied Micro Circuits, Broadcom, and numerous others took the charge and brought ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency, a branch of the military), the precursor to the internet and made internet for the masses. Also made possible for these advances are contributions made by ICs (integrated circuits) manufacturers as well as equipment manufacturers like Applied Materials, Novellus, Lattice Semi Conductor, etc. These combinations of advanced PC workstations with built in NIC (network interface controller) cards and overly exuberant investors brought about the internet bubble.

The rest is now history.

This brings us to the next logical extension to the internet - mobile communication/computing/internet and mobile commerce. Are you prepared for the next leap in the mobile world? Will you be a spectator or will you put your feet in as an entrepreneur and benefit from this still infant revolution. Combined with the social media craze now sweeping the entire globe....new riches will be made. Will you be among those with foresight to benefit from these sweeping changes now taking place around the globe or will it passes you by like the PC revolution, the communication explosion leading to the internet bubble before it!

Mobile devices like smart phones and tablet devices are re-defining the way we surf the web, communicate, watch videos, TVs, play games, interact as well as shop online. You already know more and more people are shopping online and mobile devices just added another means for people to buy whether on impulse or on needs.

Will you be a benefactor or just a spectator of this mobile commerce and social media revolution?

Why is Change so Difficult?

We all greet the new year 2012 with thunderous enthusiasm and lots of hope for a new beginning. We make resolutions to change. Yet for many of us, sadly, change eludes us. Why is change so difficult?

We have heard this quote many times, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." But do we once ponder over its meaning? It seems obvious enough we never give it a second thought. In our subconscious minds we acknowledge this "insanity" and yet we all are guilty of being insane. Look at our lives - we seem to be in a perpetual loop repeating the same thing every day.

We all desperately want to improve our health or conditions we are in. We want to get out of debt, buy a house, provide more for the family or pay for the college education of our kids. Yet taking the first steps towards change is the most difficult part. Why is it?

Every year we repeat....make a resolution, break it! It is almost like an endless loop - new year, make new resolutions, break them, wait till next year and repeat cycle until we get tired of making empty resolutions or we die.

Perhaps, this is the year for change.

Do the right thing, eat lots of leafy green vegetables and whatever fruits in season. Investigate and find the best dietary nutritional supplements to complement your food intake. Do this so you can enjoy your retirement years with good health rather than suffer from a chronic ailment. It is not a life to be dependent on prescription drugs or suffer from any of the chronic diseases that afflict the elderly population.

Best wishes for healthy living. Make 2012 a new beginning!
