We worked in full-time ministry for the first 15 years of our marriage and never thought much about saving for retirement. We had looked into network marketing but were disappointed with what we saw.

When Mel and Ruth Hurst introduced us to Market America and explained the management plan, we saw a way to build our future and help many others build theirs. We got started right away. We did our 10 to 12 hours per week, followed the Basic Five and attended every event. It was a matter of being consistent and doing the right things.

It is a fantastic journey, and we are only getting started. We went from being in debt like the rest of America to having personal freedom and money in the bank. We are now able to give more to our church and things we believe in. We invest our lives instead of spending it. Our two sons, Jourdan and Joshua, will have options that would not have been available before.

How many people really get to start over? Many people wake up at 40 with a family, a huge amount of bills and far less in their retirement accounts than they will need. Market America could be that new beginning. It is a business that creates options. How does debt-free for life sound? Any college the kids want? No problem. What about a three-month holiday anywhere in the world? And who said you had to be 65 to retire?

We are thankful for people who believed in us, followed the plan with us and are on the journey with us. Thank you, Jesus; thank you, Mel and Ruth; and thank you, JR and Loren.

This business can give you anything you want. You just have to want "it" bad enough to make the changes necessary to get up every day thinking about becoming a better person, and then doing what it takes to get there.

Success will always find the person worthy of its company.

Job Loss Raises Threat of Heart Attack

Job Loss Raises Threat of Heart Attack
By NICHOLAS BAKALAR

Unemployment increases the risk of heart attack, a new study reports, and repeated job loss raises the odds still more.

In a prospective analysis from 1992 to 2010 with interviews every other year, researchers tracked job history and heart attacks among more than 13,000 people ages 51 to 75. The study, published online Nov. 19 in The Archives of Internal Medicine, recorded 1,061 heart attacks over the period.

After adjusting for well-established heart attack risks — age, sex, smoking, income, hypertension, cholesterol screening, exercise, depression, diabetes and others — the researchers found that being unemployed also increased the risk of a heart attack, by an average of 35 percent.

Alzheimer's disease: Alternative medicine

Be careful with Alternative medicine

By Mayo Clinic staff

Various herbal mixtures, vitamins and other supplements are widely promoted as preparations that may support cognitive health or prevent or delay Alzheimer's. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) convened an expert panel that concluded current evidence doesn't support any benefit from taking vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin E, folic acid or beta carotene.

Omega-3 fatty acids
The NIH panel concluded there is somewhat stronger data — but not definitive evidence — that omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil may help prevent cognitive decline.

Alzheimer's Facts and Figures

Sobering facts below on Alzheimer's disease:
For all baby boomers waiting to retire, this is not something we all look forward to after a lifetime of working so hard. This is all the more reason to step off the treadmill of the 45 year plan making someone else rich in the process and look earnestly at the 2-3 year plan. Alzheimer's is not the only disease waiting at the retirement door for older Americans, sad to say, there are a whole lot more ailments waiting at that door, if we neglect our health while pursuing the 45 year plan.

This is the reality, and once you know and understand this reality, it is all the more reason to be vigilant of what you eat and stay and remain healthy.

Quick facts from Alzheimer's Association

  • 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease.
  • One in eight older Americans has Alzheimer's disease.
  • Alzheimer's disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States and the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed.
  • More than 15 million Americans provide unpaid care valued at $210 billion for persons with Alzheimer's and other dementias.
  • Payments for care are estimated to be $200 billion in the United States in 2012.

Cost to nation

In 2012, the direct costs of caring for those with Alzheimer’s or other dementias to American society will total an estimated $200 billion, including $140 billion in costs to Medicare and Medicaid.
Average per person Medicare payments for an older person with Alzheimer’s or other dementias are nearly 3 times higher than for an older person without these conditions. Medicaid payments are 19 times higher. These costs will only continue to soar in the coming years given the projected rapidly escalating prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease as the baby boomers age.
Unless something is done, the care costs of Alzheimer’s and other dementias will soar from $200 billion this year to a projected $1.1 trillion (in today’s dollars) by 2050. This dramatic rise includes a 500 percent increase in combined Medicare and Medicaid spending.

Jay Bradner: Open-source cancer research

This guy wants to open source cancer research just like open source in computing. This should challenge all the big pharmas to be less secretive and openly share information for the rapid advancement of medicine rather than to fatten their own pockets. Hopefully, medicine will advance just as rapidly as what open source has done in the computing field.

E-Commerce Spending On Black Friday Tops $1B For The First Time; Amazon Is The Most Visited Retailer

Source: TechCrunch.com
Leena Rao

We seen the reports that Black Friday online sales increased this year, but the numbers are finally in. comScore is reporting that U.S. retail e-commerce spending was $1.042 billion on Black Friday, an increase of 26 percent from Black Friday last year. This is the first time Black Friday sales surpassed $1 billion in online spending, says comScore.

For the holiday season-to-date, $13.7 billion has been spent online, which is a 16 percent increase versus the corresponding days last year. Consumers spend $633 million on Thanksgiving Day, a 32 percent increase from last year.

“Despite the frenzy of media coverage surrounding the importance of Black Friday in the brick-and-mortar world, we continue to see this shopping day become more and more prominent in the e-commerce channel – particularly among those who prefer to avoid crowds at the stores,” said comScore chairman, Gian Fulgoni, in a release.

Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day mobile sales on rise

From cnet.com.

Perhaps it's not surprising, given the overall rise of mobile
(not to mention the reportedly terrifying goings-on at some
brick-and-mortar establishments).

by Edward Moyer  November 23, 2012 4:49 PM PST

Here's a quick Thanksgiving/Black Friday question for you.

In the run-up to Christmas, Hanukkah, and all the other gift-laden winter holidays, would you rather go after a bargain by letting your fingers loll about on the screen of a smartphone or tablet -- or mix it up with the punch-throwing, gun-toting, um, customers at your local big box store?

We thought so. And if numbers from eBay are any indication, that instinct toward self-preservation is strong in many of us (or at least an increasing number of us). For the numbers show that, since last year, Thanksgiving and Black Friday have -- not surprisingly -- seen significant jumps in the number of people shopping via mobile device.

In a blog post today, eBay-owned PayPal said it saw a 173 percent year-over-year rise in worldwide mobile payment volume on Thanksgiving Day, with a 164 percent jump in the numbers of global shoppers who were using PayPal mobile to make purchases.

A Simple Way to Fight Pounds

From Dr. David Eifrig in Retirement Millionaire:

"A simple way to fight pounds is adding black pepper to your food.

The peppercorns used in standard pepper grinders contain an ingredient called "piperine." That's the irritant that makes you sneeze when you sniff the spice (a great trivia fact for a holiday dinner).

More important, the piperine blocks the formation of fat cells, according to new research from Sejong University in Seoul and published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Researchers aren't sure why this occurs... But the pepper inhibits the genes responsible for forming new fat cells.

Black pepper has other health benefits as well... For centuries, it was used to treat cholera and diarrhea. In modern times, studies have found black pepper has chemicals with cancer-fighting properties, like d-limonene.

I use pepper daily... I try to put a pinch on any food I can."

Vitamin D Could Halt Development of Alzheimer’s Disease

From Isotonix Blog

Author: chakefaye

For years researchers have proven that vitamin D plays a key role in the formation of healthy bodies. Vitamin D is also known to help in the development and maintenance of healthy teeth and bones, but also protects individuals from a number of diseases, including some cancers.

New research has revealed that vitamin D may now help to regulate the development of Alzheimer’s disease. In a study, led by Professor Declan Naughton of Kingston University, data revealed that all individuals with unregulated cases of Alzheimer’s disease were severely deficient in vitamin D. Contrarily, in cases where a subjects Alzheimer’s disease was well regulated or non-existent, individuals possessed elevated blood levels of vitamin D in the body.

Questioning the Superpowers of Omega-3 in Diets

From the WSJ.
HEALTH JOURNAL | October 1, 2012, 7:16 p.m. ET

Name the affliction—heart disease, Alzheimer's, arthritis, depression, asthma—and omega-3 fatty acids can help prevent it.

Or not.

That is the confusion being stirred up by new research on omega-3s, fats found in cold-water fish and plant oils that have intrigued nutrition scientists ever since the 1970s discovery that Greenland Eskimos rarely die from heart disease, despite a diet of fatty fish.

Some 21% of U.S. adults report using omega-3 fish-oil supplements, according to the Council for Responsible Nutrition, an industry trade group, making it the most popular supplement after multivitamins and vitamin D.

The Power of Sea Buckthorn

By Ryan Saba

Sea Buckthorn is a fascinating plant species, but the nutritional and medicinal value of the plant is largely unknown in North America.   The more scientists study Sea Buckthorn, the more amazed they become at the many benefits it provides for the body.  It is becoming one of the brightest stars in the nutraceutical industry, containing all known vitamins, and over 190 important nutrients in total.  All-natural, perfectly safe, and providing a multitude of health benefits, Sea buckthorn more than lives up to the current popularity it is enjoying.

What is Sea Buckthorn?

Sea Buckthorn – a small orange fruit grown in the Himalayas – has a rich history of treating numerous medical conditions.  For over 1,000 years these berries have been used all over the world to treat various conditions ranging from cancer and weight loss to skin care.  When harvested, the berries are pressed and separated into three layers, each being used to treat various conditions.  The top two layers contain healthy fat used in creams and lotions while the bottom layer is mostly liquid—perfect for use in juices and pharmaceuticals.

Boosting Brain Power with Nutrition

From Explore SupplementsDiscover the Science Behind the Supplements

Posted on November 6, 2012 by Crystal Shelton

It is certainly true that brain power is the one factor most responsible for effective gathering of information, making decisions, establishing goals and maintaining motivation. When it comes to supplying the brain itself with all it needs to carry out these very important functions, however, several factors come into play, and each of them must be considered.

Addressing brain physiology is important for ensuring oxygen and other nutrients reach the brain. Providing antioxidant support to protect nerve cells in the brain has also been proven to facilitate many cognitive benefits. Finally, providing the building blocks of neurotransmitters like acetylcholine, epinephrine and dopamine is critically important for memory, sensory perception and focus.

Path Is Found for the Spread of Alzheimer’s

By GINA KOLATA
Published: February 1, 2012, New York Times

Alzheimer’s disease seems to spread like an infection from brain cell to brain cell, two new studies in mice have found. But instead of viruses or bacteria, what is being spread is a distorted protein known as tau.

The surprising finding answers a longstanding question and has immediate implications for developing treatments, researchers said. And they suspect that other degenerative brain diseases like Parkinson’s may spread in a similar way.

Alzheimer’s researchers have long known that dying, tau-filled cells first emerge in a small area of the brain where memories are made and stored. The disease then slowly moves outward to larger areas that involve remembering and reasoning.
